Main Clause

Clauses: A clause is a group of words that has a subject and a predicate with a finite verb

Difference between Phrases and Clauses

  • A phrase does not have a subject and a predicate whereas A Clause has.
  • A phrase does not have a verb unless it is a verb  phrase wheras a Clause has a verb
  • A phrase does not make a complete sentence hence can not be written alone where as Clause is a complete sentence on its own.
  • Type of Clauses:

  • Main Clause or Independent Clause or Principal Clause.
  • Dependent Clause or Subordinate Clause
  • Noun Clause
  • Adjective Clause
  • Adverb Clause
  • Main Clause or Independent Clause or Principal Clause.:

    1.   The main clause of a sentence expresses the main idea.

    For Example:

  • The little girl was crying because she had broken her doll.
  • If we dont leave soon we will miss the train.
  • My uncle lives in England, which is a long way from Singapore!
  • A main clause can usually stand alone as a sentence in its own right:

  • The little girl was crying.
  • We will miss the train.
  • My uncle lives in England.
  • 2.  Some sentences have two ( or more ) main clauses:

  • The little girl was crying and her mother was trying to comfort her.
  • My uncle lives in England but he sometimes comes to Singapore on business.
